ExoMars, scelto il sito di atterraggio su Marte

Il lander europeo potrebbe atterrare sulla pianura di Oxia, un sito che ha tutte le carte in regola per ospitare tracce di vita. Trovarle sarà lo scopo della missione.

L'ESA ha annunciato il target primario di ExoMars, un progetto di esplorazione robotica di Marte in collaborazione con l'agenzia spaziale russa Roscosmos. Nel 2018, il rover della missione atterrerà nel sito di Oxia Planum, una regione che ospita numerose tracce di acqua passata in prossimità dell'equatore di Marte.

RICERCA PROFONDA. L'area, che è stata scelta tra una rosa di 4 siti candidati, accoglie anche, in prossimità della superficie, affioramenti rocciosi di almeno 3,9 miliardi di anni fa. «Qui dovrebbe atterrare il lander di Exomars 2018, con il perforatore costruito in Italia che andrà a cercare cosa c'è sotto la superficie fino ad una profondità di 2 metri» spiega il presidente dell'Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, Roberto Battiston. Un secondo potenziale sito di atterraggio verrà scelto prossimamente.

DUE FASI. Nel 2016 un primo lancio della missione invierà nell'orbita marziana l'ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), che cercherà tracce di metano e altri gas collegati a una possibile origine biologica nell'atmosfera del pianeta, e un lander dimostrativo, chiamato Schiaparelli in onore dell'astronomo italiano famoso per i suoi studi su Marte. Nel 2018 il secondo lancio, con atterraggio su Marte previsto 9 mesi dopo.

Valkyrie, il robot della Nasa

Costruito sul modello dell'uomo, si muove con grande libertà e può valutare situazioni critiche. Valkyrie, il robot della Nasa. Thailand army continues crackdown after coup

Thailand's military has ordered 35 more people, including prominent academics, to report to them by Saturday afternoon as the post-coup crackdown continues. The move comes a day after the army ordered more than 100 politicians, including ex-PM Yingluck Shinawatra, to come to the military council. Ms Yingluck was detained in Bangkok on Friday and spent the night in custody. Many on the army's latest list have previously been charged with speaking or acting against the monarchy. Meanwhile, several hundred protesters have taken to the streets of Bangkok to show their anger at military's seizure of power, defying a ban on large gatherings. Anti-coup banners were unfurled as they arrived at Victory Monument. Officials said the former prime minister would not be held for more than a week but insisted that her detention was necessary while matters in the country were "organised".
