Tosatura record per una merinos allo stato brado

È stata trovata vicino a Canberra, in Australia, con 40 chili di lana addosso.

A diversi chilometri da qualunque allevamento, in una boscaglia del sud dell'Australia è stata trovata una pecora merinos di circa cinque anni mai tosata: aveva addosso un'incredibile quantità di lana, 40 kg, quasi metà del suo peso (dopo il taglio pesa 44 kg), quanto serve per confezionare 30 maglioni. Curiosità a parte, l'animale era complessivamente in cattivo stato di salute ed è stato considerato "a rischio" sia per le conseguenze del folto manto in previsione dell'arrivo dell'estate australe, sia per la concreta possibilità di lacerazioni sulla pelle durante la tosatura, per via del peso stesso del vello.

La tosatura è infatti molto importante per il benessere dell'animale e va fatta mediamente una volta l'anno. L'operazione è però stata eseguita sotto anestesia e in condizioni controllate, e Tammy Ven Dange, della Canberra RSPCA (società che si occupa della cura degli animali) - che ha poi chiesto la registrazione del vello nel Guinness dei Primati - e il tosatore hanno confermato che l'animale è adesso in buone condizioni di salute.

Thailand army continues crackdown after coup

Thailand's military has ordered 35 more people, including prominent academics, to report to them by Saturday afternoon as the post-coup crackdown continues. The move comes a day after the army ordered more than 100 politicians, including ex-PM Yingluck Shinawatra, to come to the military council. Ms Yingluck was detained in Bangkok on Friday and spent the night in custody. Many on the army's latest list have previously been charged with speaking or acting against the monarchy. Meanwhile, several hundred protesters have taken to the streets of Bangkok to show their anger at military's seizure of power, defying a ban on large gatherings. Anti-coup banners were unfurled as they arrived at Victory Monument. Officials said the former prime minister would not be held for more than a week but insisted that her detention was necessary while matters in the country were "organised".
