Quali sono i luoghi più preziosi al mondo?

Ci sono luoghi sulla Terra che se scomparissero porterebbero all'estinzione di centinaia di specie animali. Quali sono?

Le Galápagos, per esempio. Ma anche il Canaima National Park, in Venezuela, o le Hawaii: sono 78 in totale, secondo uno studio pubblicato su Science i luoghi più preziosi del mondo in base al criterio della biodiversità.

La ricerca ha calcolato “la non sostituibilità delle aree protette del mondo” – individuando, di fatto, quali sono i luoghi della Terra la cui scomparsa porterebbe sull’orlo dell’estinzione centinaia di specie animali.

L’analisi ha proporzioni ciclopiche: i ricercatori hanno esaminato i dati di 173.000 aree protette, incrociandole con informazioni sullo stato di conservazione di 21.500 specie di uccelli, anfibi e mammiferi. Il risultato abbraccia 34 Paesi e 78 siti diversi, metà dei quali sono già patrimonio mondiale dell’umanità secondo l’Unesco.

LUOGHI IN PERICOLO. Il problema è legato all’altra metà, nella quale rientrano luoghi incredibili come lo Udzungwa Mountains National Park, in Tanzania, o la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in Colombia. Aree che, se riconosciute come insostituibili, potrebbero godere di quelle tutele e attenzioni necessarie a preservarle.

Costruito sul modello dell'uomo, si muove con grande libertà e può valutare situazioni critiche. Valkyrie, il robot della Nasa. Thailand army continues crackdown after coup

Thailand's military has ordered 35 more people, including prominent academics, to report to them by Saturday afternoon as the post-coup crackdown continues. The move comes a day after the army ordered more than 100 politicians, including ex-PM Yingluck Shinawatra, to come to the military council. Ms Yingluck was detained in Bangkok on Friday and spent the night in custody. Many on the army's latest list have previously been charged with speaking or acting against the monarchy. Meanwhile, several hundred protesters have taken to the streets of Bangkok to show their anger at military's seizure of power, defying a ban on large gatherings. Anti-coup banners were unfurled as they arrived at Victory Monument. Officials said the former prime minister would not be held for more than a week but insisted that her detention was necessary while matters in the country were "organised".
