Bellezze sottomarine... viste dallo spazio

La barriera delle Bahamas vista dal satellite Landsat-8.

La Natura ha impiegato circa 100 milioni di anni per costruire le strutture subacque del Great Bahamas Bank: miliardi di miliardi di miliardi di  frammenti di organismi marini si sono accumulati è hanno costruito una muraglia tortuosa di sedimenti pochi metri sotto il livello del mare. 

La Great Bahamas Bank si trova a nord di Cuba (vedi) e forma buona parte dell'arcipelago delle Bahamas le cui isole si levano proprio sopra due lunghi banchi sottomarini (Great Bahamas Bank e Little Bahamas Bank).

In questa immagine scattata del satellite Landsat-8 si nota la barriera (in basso) modellata dalle correnti marine. Si nota anche il punto esatto dove l'acqua finisce in un'enorme fossa atlantica nota con il nome di "lingua dell'Oceano"  (in blu scuro), una voragine che scende repentinamente fino a circa 4.000 metri di profondità.  

STORIA ANTICA. Durante l'ultima era glaciale tutta questa zona si trovava sopra il livello del mare e fu "scolpita" dagli eventi atmosferici. Vento, pioggie e fiumi crearono l'enorme valle, come avvenne per altre formazioni analoghe, come il Grand Canyon. Quando terminò l'era glaciale, lo scioglimento dei ghiacci fece salire il livello del mare che invase il canyon.

Londonderry explosion: 'Firebomb' explodes in Everglades Hotel

No-one was injured in the explosion but the reception area was extensively damaged A masked man has thrown what police have described as a "firebomb" into the reception area of a Londonderry hotel. Valkyrie, il robot della Nasa

Costruito sul modello dell'uomo, si muove con grande libertà e può valutare situazioni critiche. Valkyrie, il robot della Nasa. La Nasa lo ha tenuto segreto per più di una anno, da quando cioè, durante il  Darpa Robotics Challenge  dell’anno scorso, disse che stava lavorando al progetto di un robot umanoide, insieme a prestigiose università Usa, ma senza svelarne le caratteristiche. Thailand army continues crackdown after coup

Thailand's military has ordered 35 more people, including prominent academics, to report to them by Saturday afternoon as the post-coup crackdown continues. The move comes a day after the army ordered more than 100 politicians, including ex-PM Yingluck Shinawatra, to come to the military council. Ms Yingluck was detained in Bangkok on Friday and spent the night in custody. Many on the army's latest list have previously been charged with speaking or acting against the monarchy. Meanwhile, several hundred protesters have taken to the streets of Bangkok to show their anger at military's seizure of power, defying a ban on large gatherings. Anti-coup banners were unfurled as they arrived at Victory Monument. Officials said the former prime minister would not be held for more than a week but insisted that her detention was necessary while matters in the country were "organised".
